This study presents a quantitative energy balance evaluation of an experimental claim involving deuterium enrichment observed in titanium hydride powder samples that underwent thermal cycling. The original work attributes this enrichment to a proposed two step nuclear reaction process, in which electrons are first captured through a coherent mechanism, followed by a subsequent neutron capture event, together framed as a form of low energy nuclear reaction.

The evaluation carefully separates the actual measured enrichment of deuterium found in gas released from the sample from a further, additional assumption needed to extend that measurement to represent the hydrogen content of the entire sample. Working within this conditional assumption, the analysis translates a reported enrichment factor into an inferred rate of deuterium production, which in turn implies a very substantial rate of nuclear energy release if the subsequent neutron capture step proceeds as proposed. The study further calculates that if the energy needed to drive the initial, energy-absorbing electron capture step were drawn from the sample's own thermal environment, this would correspond to a large and specific limiting heat signal. It stresses that none of these figures represent actual measured calorimetric data, but rather numerical consequences that follow logically from the assumptions being tested.

The analysis also examines an energy shortfall associated with the electron capture step and considers the physical requirements needed to explain why an expected gamma ray emission, typically associated with this type of nuclear process, would not be observed. It concludes that the proposed model does not offer a clearly defined, quantitatively supported mechanism capable of supplying the missing energy. This study's findings are framed as a specific, quantitative constraint on the particular reaction mechanism proposed in the original work.
