Summary

The preprint offers an addition to the existing strategy of controlling mosquito-borne epidemics, specifically chikungunya outbreaks in China. Using a deterministic compartmental ODE model, the authors propose expanding the existing nine-step strategy to a twelve-step strategy by including ‘screening symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals early’ as a critical part in the epidemic management plan.

Strengths

One strength of this preprint is the use of three transmission models to support the overall claim. The preprint also acknowledges limited resources for public health departments, and offers this model as a way to manage resources.

Limitations

One limitation of this preprint is the nature of hypothetical testing, and the limited generalizability for real-world conditions. Another limitation is the authors say their findings hold for other reasonable values, but they do not show this. The simulated town has only 1,000 people and the number of mosquitoes is chosen arbitrarily. There are also some notable mistakes in the text and figures.
